Paul Stephens appointed as Chief Commercial Officer at SmartDebit
Instrumental in the go-to-market strategy for Klarna in the UK, Stephens steps in to supercharge Direct Debit acceptance.
SmartDebit, the UK’s leading Direct Debit service provider, has appointed Paul Stephens as Chief Commercial Officer. This is a new board-level role in the company, reporting directly to the CEO. Taking the lead on the company’s ambitious business development growth initiatives, he assumes responsibility from CEO, Terry Jones, for the direction of the sales and marketing function.
The appointment of a Chief Commercial Officer marks SmartDebit’s first new Board position since 2014, following a period of double-figure financial growth and business expansion.
Paul joins SmartDebit from Capita where he was Director of Strategy and Alliances for the Pay 360 business unit. Before this strategic role, he worked as part of Klarna’s UK launch team and moved on to become Commercial Director of this rapid growth business in, what was considered, a key strategic market for their unique payment proposition.

Passionate about the Fintech & payments space with an impressive career spanning over 15 years across the full payments spectrum. Amongst his most notable achievements, Stephens led multiple strategic projects with the likes of VISA, Mastercard and PPRO.
